African Americans are central to the American experience. This course—held in conjunction with the Kinsey Collection of African American Art currently exhibited at the HKU Museum & Art Gallery—will explore African American history and culture by examining a wide range of historical and literary documents, art, media, and genres of creative expression. Through examining the works of prominent black figures such as Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, Zora Neale Hurston, W.E.B. Du Bois, Langston Hughes, Martin Luther King, Jr., Spike Lee, Michael Jackson, and Barack Obama, the course takes students through the African American legacy from the days of slavery to the Obama presidency.
