Anna Marie Bautista
PhD in American Studies
(2017-2020)

Supervisors: Dr. Tim Gruenewald and Professor Kendall A. Johnson

Why HKU? Pursuing postgraduate work in American Studies at HKU has allowed me to critically engage with my interests in American popular culture and gender studies. The interdisciplinary nature of the field has enabled me to examine American popular culture from a variety of perspectives and to explore its influence in a transnational context.

PhD Project:
Female Narratives and Constructions of Feminism in US Television

Short Abstract: My dissertation examines the representation of gender and feminism in recent U.S. television series and intends to assess how feminist thought is reflected in television series over the past twenty years and to survey how the developments in feminism have impacted cultural production, particularly in relation to the resurgent cultural focus on gender equality and conceptions of power.

Background: Anna studied a BA in American Studies and English Literature at the University of Hong Kong and also pursued an MPhil in English Literature at The University of Hong Kong. She was Lecturer in Media, Communications and Cultural Studies at the School of Professional and Continuing Education at the University of Hong Kong (HKU SPACE). Her teaching and research interests include various aspects of film, television and popular culture studies, particularly in representations of gender.
