The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection includes rare and authentic art, artifacts, books and manuscripts that reveal the untold story of African American achievements and their important contribution to the historic, economic and cultural development of the United States over the last 400 years. On tour since 2007, the Kinsey Collection has been seen by over 4 million people in 18 cities around the United States. It is the first privately owned collection to have been shown at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, the most visited museum in the world, and is now on long-term display at Epcot, a theme park at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, that attracts millions of visitors every year. Rising Above is the first time the Kinsey Collection will be seen outside of the United States. The exhibition includes over 100 items that range from paintings and sculptures, to rare first editions and manuscripts, letters and official records that testify to the courage and hope of African Americans rising above the challenges they faced – and still face – to make their voices heard. Theirs is a message of success and imagination, inclusion and engagement, belief and freedom that speaks to us all. The exhibition is co-organized by the Faculty of Arts and the University Museum and Art Gallery of the University of Hong Kong. Supporting organizations include the Consulate General of the United States in Hong Kong and Macau, the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Tourism Board.
